However, since I last played, the Irish are now tribes, starting with Agnatic gavelkind, and the options are open to move to tanistry or elective gavelkind.
The thing with tanistry is that your vassals will prefer to elect older members of your dynasty iirc. So you'll end up with older characters with shorter reigns. On the other hand with elective you can just choose your favorite son/nephew/grandson etc that you personally educated/bred to have good congenital traits and set them up for a long reign.

Tanistry is elective Gavelkind where enstead of random vassals, your family inheirits. Its good to keep it in the family, but bad if you want a long reign with good traits. usualy the ai favors older people woth lots of prestige, so you'll end up being that one uncle twice removed that you forgot about.
If you want to get to feudal quickly focus on upgrading tribal authority to max quickly (no negative effect because your not a pagan), and build up your hill fort to max (raiding is the best way to make money quickly). For most cases, Tanistry is the superior version of elective (risk of your dynasty losing its authority is the risk that ain't as present here). Also, it would be a waste to not use the law when only the Celts cane have it.

Crusader Kings 3 has changed a lot from the last title which released all the way back in 2012. One of the biggest departures is succession laws.
Here's the real difference. In Elective, if you don't suck, and your chosen successor doesn't suck, it's usually a done deal your voters will vote with you and install your successor. In Tanistry, your voters look at your chosen successor, blink, say, "that's nice", and then vote for your imbecile Uncle Fred, and there's nothing you can do about it.

In this system the Tanist is the office of heir-apparent, or second-in-command, among the Gaelic patrilineal dynasties of Ireland, Scotland and Mann, to succeed to the chieftainship or to the kingship. The word is preserved in the Republic of Ireland's government, where the prime minister is the Taoiseach while the deputy prime minister is the Tánaiste. Tanistry is, in my opinion, the worst of the special election types (well, I haven't tried Feudal Elective), but it can have it uses, if you want to play it right.
